What is tree removal? A complete guide

The plain definition

Tree removal is the complete felling or dismantling of a tree so that nothing remains above ground level except the stump. Everything - crown, limbs, trunk - comes down and leaves the site.

That distinguishes it from two things it is often confused with. Pruning removes selected parts of a tree that goes on living. Lopping is indiscriminate cutting back of limbs, which leaves a living but damaged tree. Removal ends the tree, and no amount of regret afterwards brings it back.

When it is genuinely warranted

Four situations stand up to scrutiny.

The tree is dead or dying. No leaf flush in spring, bark shedding in sheets, fungal brackets at the base, or a canopy that has thinned progressively over two or three seasons. A dead tree does not become safer with time - it becomes more brittle and less predictable.

There is a structural defect that cannot be pruned out. A split at a co-dominant union, a cavity running through the stem, a root plate that has lifted after a storm, or significant decay at the base. Some defects can be managed by reducing the load on them. Others cannot.

The tree is causing damage that cannot be managed otherwise. Roots inside a sewer line, a stem growing into a footing, or a canopy that cannot be cleared from a structure without destroying the tree.

It is a declared environmental weed. Camphor laurel, cocos palm, umbrella tree and several others. Removal here is usually the recommended outcome rather than a last resort.

What is not a reason

Leaf litter in gutters is a gutter guard problem. Shade is often a thinning or reduction problem. Fruit drop is a seasonal nuisance. A tree being large is not a defect - the biggest trees are frequently the soundest.

A good operator will tell you this before taking your money, because the tree that gets removed for leaf litter is the one the next owner pays thousands to replace with something that will take thirty years to do the same job.

How a removal is carried out

The site gets assessed first: the lean, the drop zone, overhead services, ground conditions and the route the material will take to the chipper.

Where there is room, the tree is felled in one piece using a directional notch and a hinge to control the fall. Where there is not - which is most suburban blocks - the tree is dismantled. A climber ascends on rope and harness, removes limbs in sections, and either lowers them on a rigging line or drops them into a cleared zone. The stem then comes down in rounds.
