Nothing here is priced over the phone. A gum that looks straightforward from the back step is a different job once you see that the only access is a 900mm side gate, or that the drop zone is a neighbour's colorbond fence. The quote comes after someone stands under the tree.
What makes coastal tree work different
Three things shape almost every job on this coast.
The first is wind. The Sunshine Coast sits in cyclonic wind region B, and the summer storm line that runs in off the range does real damage. Trees that were fine for twenty years shed limbs in a single afternoon, and the failures are rarely random: co-dominant stems with included bark, old flush cuts that never sealed, and heavy end-weight on long horizontal limbs.
The second is species. Poincianas throw enormous lateral limbs over driveways. Hoop pines and eucalypts drop deadwood from height. Figs lift paths and block drains. And cocos palms are everywhere, self-seeding through gullies and dropping fruit that has to be cleaned up whether the palm stays or goes.
The third is the rules, which change depending on which side of a boundary you are on. Noosa Council is noticeably stricter than Sunshine Coast Council, and both protect trees the average owner assumes are theirs to cut. Our guide to Sunshine Coast tree regulations sets out what applies where.
Removals, lopping and stumps
A removal is warranted when a tree is dead, structurally failing, or genuinely in the wrong place - built into a slab, undermining a retaining wall, or shading a roof to the point that the tiles never dry out. It is not warranted just because a tree is large, and we will say so.
Where the tree can stay, a proper reduction does more good than a removal. Reduction to Australian Standard AS 4373 takes weight off the ends of limbs and shortens the lever arm without stripping the canopy. Topping - cutting straight through the trunk and leaving a hat rack - is the thing that creates the hazard people ring us about five years later.
Once a tree is down, the stump is a separate decision. Grinding is faster and cheaper and leaves the root plate in the ground to rot. Full excavation costs more but is the only option where something structural is going over the top. The comparison between the two is worth two minutes of reading before you choose.

Do I need council approval to remove a tree on the Sunshine Coast?
Often, yes. Sunshine Coast Council protects vegetation through its planning scheme and through Vegetation Protection Orders on specific trees, and Noosa Council applies its own, stricter controls. Whether you need approval depends on the tree, the zoning of your lot and any covenant on the title. We check before quoting so the job does not stop halfway.
What does tree removal cost on the Sunshine Coast?
The published guidance on this site puts Sunshine Coast tree removal between roughly $1,000 and $6,000, driven by the size and species of the tree. Can I do my own tree work?
You can, on your own land, within council rules. Most household insurers will not cover you for damage or injury arising from your own chainsaw work at height, and a limb dropped onto a roof or a neighbour's fence becomes your problem entirely. Anything requiring a ladder, a rope or a cut above shoulder height is worth handing over.
Do you work after storms?

What happens to the wood and the mess?
Branch material is chipped on site and taken away, timber is cut and removed unless you want it left for firewood, and the area is raked down before the crew leaves. Chip can be left on your garden beds if you ask for it, which saves you buying mulch.
