Where these numbers come from
The two figures below are the ones published on this site's own pages, not industry estimates borrowed from overseas. They are ranges, not quotes, and every job is priced after a site visit.

Anything you see advertised well under those bands usually excludes something - the timber removal, the clean-up, the stump, or the insurance.
The five things that actually move a quote
Access. The single biggest variable. A tree a crane can reach from the street is a completely different job to the same tree behind a 900mm side gate, where every section is carried out by hand. Restricted access can double a price on its own.
What is underneath. An open paddock means limbs can be dropped. A tile roof, a pergola, a pool or a neighbour's shed means every piece is roped and lowered under control, which is slow and takes more people.
Size and species. Height matters less than mass. A 15-metre fig has far more timber in it than a 20-metre wattle. Hardwoods - spotted gum, ironbark, tallowwood - are heavier and slower on the saw than camphor laurel or poinciana.
Condition. Counter-intuitively, a dead tree often costs more than a live one. A climber cannot trust a dead union with their weight, so the job moves to an elevated work platform, and that is a hire cost plus setup time.
Site protection and traffic. Lawn protection mats, scaffolding over a pool, or traffic management where the drop zone touches a road are all real costs that appear when the site demands them.
The separate line items
Ask for these to be itemised so you can compare quotes properly:
- Stump grinding or excavation, which is almost never in the base price
- Removal of timber versus leaving it cut for firewood
- Chip left on site as mulch, which is free, versus carted away, which is not
- Root chasing under paths or beds
- Council application fees or an arborist report where one is required
- Turf repair after machine access
When the cheap quote is the expensive one
Two things to check before you take the lowest number. First, public liability insurance and workers compensation - if an uninsured operator drops a limb through your roof, or hurts themselves in your yard, that becomes your problem. Ask for the certificate of currency, not a verbal assurance.
Second, what happens to the debris. A quote that does not mention clean-up frequently means a pile of timber left on your lawn and a second bill to shift it.
