Tree lopping and pruning: keeping trees healthy and shapely

The distinction that matters

People use lopping and pruning as though they were the same service. They are not, and the difference shows up years after the invoice is paid.

Pruning is selective. Each cut is chosen for a reason and placed where the tree can respond - outside the branch collar, or back to a lateral big enough to take over. The tree seals the wound and carries on.

Lopping is indiscriminate. Limbs are cut through wherever is convenient for the person holding the saw. The stub cannot seal, decay enters, and the tree pushes out a mass of weakly attached regrowth.

What a tree does after each

After good pruning: the wound closes progressively from the edges over two or three seasons. Growth resumes in a normal pattern from existing buds. Structure is preserved.

After lopping: the stub dies back and decay fungi colonise the exposed face. The tree, having lost a large slice of its leaf area, activates dormant buds under the bark and produces epicormic shoots. Those shoots grow fast, are attached only to the outermost wood, and become heavy while the wood they are attached to is rotting.

On the Sunshine Coast the arithmetic usually resolves in three to seven years, in a summer storm.

Getting the same result, safely

Almost everything people want from lopping is achievable through defined pruning operations:

  • Too tall or too wide - crown reduction back to suitable laterals
  • Too dark underneath - crown thinning
  • Branches over the drive - crown lifting
  • Dead material falling - dead-wooding

The full set of operations covers when each applies. The limit is honest: a tree that is fundamentally too big for its position cannot be made small by legitimate pruning, and in that case the answer is removal and a better replanting.

Tools and timing

Bypass secateurs, loppers and a pull-stroke pruning saw handle everything a homeowner should be doing from the ground. Chainsaws belong to people with the gear and training to use them at height.

In south-east Queensland, late winter into early spring suits structural work, giving the tree the whole growing season to close its wounds. Deadwood and storm damage come off whenever they are found. The detail is in the timing guide.

Environmental side

Trees on suburban blocks are habitat. Hollows in mature eucalypts house possums, gliders and parrots, and they take a century to form. Dead standing limbs - the ones most likely to be removed first - are often the ones being used.

Where a dead limb is not over anything that matters, leaving it is a legitimate arboricultural decision and worth discussing rather than defaulting to removal.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Is lopping ever the same as pruning?

No. Pruning removes selected material for a reason, cutting in places where the tree can seal the wound. Lopping cuts through limbs wherever is convenient, leaving stubs the tree cannot close. In casual Australian speech the words get used interchangeably, which is how a lot of trees end up damaged by people who thought they were ordering maintenance.

What do lopping and pruning cost differently?

Proper pruning usually costs more per visit because it takes longer and needs a skilled climber making judgement calls. It costs far less over the life of the tree, because a well-pruned tree needs less frequent attention and is not building the failure that a lopped tree is building.

How do I know if my tree has been lopped before?

Look for clusters of thin, straight, uniform shoots coming from a single point on a thicker limb, with an obvious stub in the middle of them. That is epicormic regrowth from an old lopping cut, and it is the pattern that eventually tears out. A tree with that history needs assessment rather than another round of the same.

Can a lopped tree be fixed?

Partly. Restoration pruning over several seasons selects the best-placed regrowth shoots and removes the rest, gradually rebuilding a defensible structure. It never fully undoes the decay that entered through the original stubs, but on a valuable tree it is a better outcome than removal.
